#7-seed York Dukes defeated the #6-seed Geneva Vikings 11-10 in an overtime thriller at the IHSLA B-Class Semifinal game yesterday in Geneva. The weather delay from Thursday to Friday heightened the excitement surrounding the match, and York did not disappoint the fans as they continued their unlikely run to the IHSLA finals. The Dukes will face the heavily favored #1-seed Grayslake North Knights in the Lacrosse Cup Championship game today at 3:30PM at Palatine High School.
York (12-3 in B-Class play) plays Cinderella this year, making their first Final Four appearance as well as their first IHSLA Lacrosse Cup appearance. En route to the championship game, they conquered the B-Class elite including a 1-goal rough-and-tumble victory over Lake Zurich in the second round. The wins are no surprise to the Dukes. Throughout the season, York challenged themselves with an aggressive schedule, playing seven A-Class opponents and a cadre of highly ranked B-Class non-conference opponents to prepare them for the post-season. York is now battle-tested and ready for the big stage.
Grayslake North makes its second straight appearance in the IHSLA Lacrosse Cup and is ready for redemption after falling to powerful Waubonsie Valley in the 2011 Championship. The Knights have destroyed their B-Class counterparts all year long, outscoring their opponents 53-25 in the playoffs. They have a strong attack led by Virginia recruit AJ Fish and senior Matt Schlagetter, the state’s leading scorers who each have 110 points this season (Fish has 70 goals with 40 assists, Schlagetter has 55 goals and 55 assists). If these boys aren’t hard enough to contain, there are six more players with 15 points or more on the season to back them up. Furthermore, the Knights have already encountered the Dukes during the regular season. Grayslake North won that matchup 17-8.
